Property Description
These three splendidly rustic and completely traditional farmhouses are located deep in remote Andalusian countryside. Surrounded by olive and almond groves, pine forests and oak woods, amongst rivers and reservoirs of clear waters, they enjoy complete peace below the several mountain ranges which encompass them.
Once a large family farm, the buildings have been restored and refurbished for holiday lets. Ideal for big groups or families holidaying together who want to get far, far away from the madding crowds, the three houses share the extensive grounds and swimming pool.
Each of the large houses has a main living area downstairs, with bedrooms and bathrooms distributed on both floors. Traditional rustic design predominates: white walls, terracotta floors, wooden beams and furnishings which include some lovely old pieces.
Perhaps the main attraction in this splendid setting is the richness of the surrounding nature, with a marked contrast between the alpine landscape of the mountain ranges around Castril and the arid valleys below. La Comarca de Baza is an unmerciful desert basin of searing white light reflecting from barren rock, clouds of dust swirling on the breeze; nothing survives except a few clumps of impoverished esparto grass. Yet there are also small patches of luxuriant green - oases in a parched land - the irrigated valleys of rivers flowing down from the Sierras. Here, tiny farming communities somehow subsist by growing sunflowers, corn and a few vegetables.
Unmerciful, but it is also magical. And what makes it very special are the mountains which surround it. Some of the most beautiful Natural Parks in the country are only minutes away; Sierra de Baza to the south, the Sierras of Huéscar, Castril, Segura and Cazola to the north, Lúcar, Orce, Umbría and María to the west. And just for good measure, Jabalcón rises straight out of the desert plain, reminiscent of Ayers Rock in Australia.
These mountains offer a stunning contrast: pine forests, vertical rock faces, trout rivers, hot springs (the clear waters of Baño de Zújar maintain a constant 39º C, whatever the season), fantastic views and some very pretty villages.
Incredible contrasts which have created an enormous variety of flora and fauna. There is plenty of good walking to be done and lots of hidden, old-time Andalusian corners to discover.
Don't expect mod-cons and satellite dishes here, these farmhouses are traditional in every sense, simple, rustic and homely. But for genuine old-style rural Andalusian living, in a remote and very special location, this is impossible to beat.
